Missing 5-year-old boy with Down syndrome found with his loyal dog keeping him safe

Dogs are very loyal and protective pets, especially when it comes to young children. There have been many cases of children going missing from their homes, only to be found with their trusty dog by their side to keep them safe.

That was the case recently, after a missing 5-year-old boy was found safe and sound thanks to his protective German Shepherd.

On April 2, officers from the Houston Police Department responded to a call about a boy walking down the train tracks alone with his dog at his side.

Sergeant Ricardo Salas of the department says he realized the 5-year-old had Down syndrome and was half a mile from his house. He also realized that the German shepherd, named Alejandro, had followed him as his protector.

Witnesses told me the dog was with the boy when he was found. As I was walking away with the child, the dog followed me,” the Sgt. Salas wrote on Twitter. “This dog was his protector and his angel.”

“It sounds to us like the dog knew something was up, he knew the kid wasn’t supposed to be wandering around and ended up following him,” he told the Houston Chronicle. “He was very protective and didn’t take his eyes off the girl.”

Even with the officers there to help them, Alejandro remained alert, keeping an eye on his human.

“The dog basically followed me everywhere he went. He wasn’t barking, he wasn’t intimidated,” Salas added, saying that when he got the boy into the car, the dog “jumped into the driver’s seat with him.”

Soon, officers received another call and discovered that the child was a missing child named Jose. The boy’s mother, Jasmine Martinez, told Click 2 Houston that she and her 5-year-old son had started taking a nap and when she woke up she realized that José had walked away from her.

Fortunately, all went well: the boy had no injuries other than a few minor scratches. The family is grateful, but not surprised, that his loyal dog stepped in to protect José when he was in danger.

“Alejandro has always been a very overprotective dog since we got him, we got him when he was a baby. I wasn’t surprised when they said she was walking with him the whole time,” José’s sister, Samantha Muñoz, told Click 2 Houston.

Police said no charges would be brought against the family, and the mother is now installing child protection locks to prevent something like this from happening again.

Sergeant Salas says he was touched by the “level of loyalty this dog had to this little boy” and says it was important for the dog to take care of him because the train tracks are normally very busy.

“Thank you God for taking care of this child,” he wrote.
Thank goodness this dog was there to keep this child safe. You are a great dog, Alejandro!
