Loyal German Shepherd steps up to be protector of orphaned baby deer

It’s amazing how loyal and protective dogs can be. They are always ready to step up and help someone in need, from people to other dogs.

It’s even more inspiring to see them protect another animal. We love seeing how different species form unlikely bonds, like this dog who has become best friends with an injured deer.

Sarge is a 9-year-old German Shepherd who had a very unexpected new baby brother when his owner, Cheryl Stephen, brought home an orphaned fawn that he found lying on the road.

To Cheryl’s surprise, the dog instantly came over to take care of the poor deer, which she named Buckwheat.

“Something clicked for Sarge and he instantly fell in love with Buckwheat,” Cheryl told The Dodo. “He wanted to be involved in all aspects of Buckwheat’s care…he took on the role of Buckwheat’s guardian.”

As the deer grew and got back on its feet, Sarge was happy to lead it, and Buckwheat followed close behind as if he were his big brother.

“When we would take Buckwheat outside, Sarge would walk alongside him and keep him from wandering off,” Cheryl said.
Over time, Buckwheat grew. He got to the point where he no longer needed Sarge’s help and was getting too old for the house.

He was finally ready to return to nature.

But while Buckwheat is alone now, Sarge still has plenty of deer to take care of.

Cheryl has continued to foster and rehabilitate injured and orphaned deer, and Sarge is always willing to help. While some of the deer don’t make it, they give them all the love and care they can.

“When I walk through the door with a fawn, Sarge springs into action,” Cheryl told The Dodo. “He wants to check them out and will frantically poke and poke to determine his condition.”

“The fawns are attracted to Sarge and feel safe in his presence. Sarge won’t leave his side.

Thank you, Sergeant, for always taking such good care of these fawns when they need help! It shows how smart and loving dogs can be.
