Boy, 5, survives savage attack by two dogs only to be called a ‘monster’ in public

At just five years old, little Ryder Wells has been through more horrors than most would experience in a lifetime.

Against all odds, the young man from North Carolina survived a brutal attack by two Rottweilers while visiting his family for Thanksgiving in 2015.

He was just 21 months old when the two 100-pound dogs attacked him. He lost half his face, his teeth were crushed and he suffered a broken arm and a punctured lung.

His family didn’t think he would survive, but this little fighter made it and has since endured around 50 surgeries.

Instead of being praised for overcoming such a horrible attack, this sweet boy now has to put up with cruel comments from children and adults.

His teaching assistant said that when Ryder started school, even the adults stared at him.

“When we go to the park, there’s a kid who points at it and yells ‘monster’ before running off.” Mom Brittany said, according to The Mirror newspaper.

“Going out shopping the other day, someone yelled ‘yuck’ at him. It’s hard and it breaks my heart as a father that after everything he’s been through, people aren’t always kind to something he can’t help.

“But he’s such a fighter that he doesn’t let anything stop him.”

Ryder’s survival is described as a “miracle” as not even the doctors expected him to make it.

Now the 31-year-old Granite Falls mother is afraid her son will start school.

She “wears glasses and a cap and sometimes lowers her head to hide her face from him. But I just tell him every day that he’s beautiful, different is beautiful, and it’s okay to be different.

“I just reassure him as much as I can, but I am absolutely terrified of when he goes to school. There will always be a couple of kids who won’t be nice.”

She now wants to raise awareness of the effects bullying can have on someone with a facial disfigurement and she hopes Ryder’s story will make people think twice about how they treat people who look different.

We must teach our children not to single out those who look different and be kind to help children like Ryder live the happy life they deserve.
