Kate Whiddon and her boyfriend broke down the first time they saw their 4-year-old son walk.
You might think that four years is a bit late for a child to take their first steps, but this particular case is quite special: Katie’s little one was born without arms or legs.
Katie was only 18 weeks pregnant when she went to the doctor for an ultrasound and received some devastating news.
Her son, Camden, was diagnosed with phocomelia, a birth defect in which the patient does not develop an arm, a leg, or sometimes multiple limbs.
After the diagnosis, Katie, a mother of three, feared that her son would have difficulty performing even the simplest tasks in life.
“When I first found out I wouldn’t have arms or legs, I thought I’d just be a vegetable…I didn’t know what to expect,” she told PEOPLE.
“He had just turned 19 and didn’t know, ‘Will I be able to be good enough for him?'”
However, despite her fears, it turned out that Camden was a brave and inspiring boy. Nothing in this world was going to stop him.
When he was about 2 months old, I had him laying on my bed… I saw him out of the corner of my eye and he was hitting the toys with his arms,” she said.
“I started to cry, he was so happy and that confirmed that he was going to be able to do things.”
A video of the first time Camden walked was captured and quickly went viral on the web. In it, Camden can be seen standing in front of Katie’s boyfriend, Cole Greene. Cole encourages the adorable boy to take a walk, while his sister gloats in the background.
I come to you,” an excited Camden can be heard saying in the video. “I’m walking!”
Camden slowly but surely makes his way over to Greene and his 3-year-old sister, Ryleigh.
It’s a magical moment, one that proved once again that Camden will and will overcome any obstacle in his way.
We started crying, we were so proud,” Whiddon told PEOPLE.
“I didn’t know when that day would come. I didn’t think he was ready for that yet and I was so surprised and happy. It was very exciting and [his sister of his] Ryleigh was there jumping, excited”.
Camden’s first ride certainly captured the imagination of people around the world. The clip has been viewed and shared thousands of times, while Whiddon is convinced that her son is destined for great things.
“Call it mother intuition, but I feel like he’s going to be one of those motivational speakers and now giving him the exposure will give him a platform so that when he’s ready to speak for himself, he’ll have people who really want to listen to him and care about what he has. what to say”.
