As a parent, all you want to do is protect your child from any possible harm and keep them safe.
So seeing your child sick and not being able to do anything about it is possibly the worst thing that can happen to any parent.
Magalli Jiménez gave birth to a beautiful daughter whom she named Ava Skye. The first year of her daughter’s life was wonderful, but everything quickly fell apart when Ava turned 13 months.
Jiménez took her daughter to the doctor when she noticed that she was in pain. The doctor informed the young mother of the deadly diagnosis; a muscle cancer that impeded the physical development of the little girl and caused her pain.
The young mother braced herself for battle and she knew she had to be strong for her baby. She was hopeful about the treatment plan prescribed by Skye’s oncologist. When she watched her little one undergo painful chemotherapy sessions, she wished she could take her place.
After multiple rounds of chemotherapy and check-ups, Skye was finally declared to be in remission. Her family was ecstatic. They did not know that the girl would relapse very soon.
In July 2022, the family discovered that Skye’s cancer had relapsed. Doctors told the family that the cancer was resistant to treatment and that the only hope was to remove it surgically. But due to Skye’s young age, she wouldn’t have much hope of recovering from the surgery.
The family was devastated. Jiménez realized that she would only have a few days or, at best, a few weeks with her daughter. She watched as her daughter slowly went from being a healthy girl to a weak one, that she could barely walk or talk.
Her mother made the difficult decision to commit her daughter to hospice care to make her last days as comfortable as possible. Although Jiménez would occasionally go to the bathroom to cry, she always made sure to just smile and laugh with her daughter.
“We’re just going to let her live her life and enjoy her and do all the things we’ve always wanted to do with her. We have made a wish list for her,” Jiménez said.
Jiménez’s friend, Davina Galván, who is also the mother of a child with cancer, created a GoFundMe page for the family to raise $5,000. She wanted her friend Jimenez to have all the funds she needed to fulfill all the things on her daughter’s wish list.
On August 22, 2022, Skye breathed her last in the presence of her mother. When Skye passed away, her mother held her close to her body, heartbroken but relieved that her little girl was no longer suffering.
One day before her death, little Skye, who could barely stand, sang a song to her mother, while she looked into her eyes. She sang her favorite song, singing, “I love you. You love me. We are a happy family. With a big big hug and a kiss kiss. [sic] Won’t you say you love me too?
Her mother was able to capture the sweet moment on video. She posted the video to show it to the world so everyone could witness how sweet the little guy had been; consoling her mother in her last hours.
My heart will be broken forever, it will never be the same, but I promised her that I would live for her. Hug your kids a little tighter today, even when they drive you crazy,” Jimenez said.
Jiménez shared how she missed her daughter constantly and would do anything to be able to hug her one more time.
