Rescued stray dog with rough past sleeps with his new food bowl every single night

Stray dogs may be living a rough life on the streets, but they often have the kindest and purest souls.

They show aggression to mask their fear when approached by strangers, but the truth is that they have been alone for so long that they don’t know how to respond to human contact.

These precious animals just want to be loved, and they’re just waiting for the right person to give it to them.

A perfect example of such a mutt is Neville, a Jack Russell terrier mix. Susanne found the photo of him while she was checking the website of her local rescue. Seeing the dog, Susanne knew she had to have it.
Although she already had a rescue dog at home, she couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to help another puppy in need of a family.

“He was 10 years old and I knew instantly that he loved him!” Susanne, who requested that her last name not be revealed, told The Dodo.

“I queued for three hours outside the center to make sure I was the first to register my interest, and we bonded the moment we looked at each other.”

Neville was found wandering the streets as a homeless man, so no one knew about his past. However, based on his poor physical condition when he was rescued, it appears that the dog has had a difficult life.

The pup was severely traumatized, unneutered and had a mouth full of rotten teeth when the shelter caught him.

Susanne took him home and immediately saw the effects of Neville’s dark history. Although he felt safe in his new home, the dog’s behavior changed when it came time to eat.

“We think he had been used to breed and clearly mistreated,” Susanne recalled. “In the beginning, he used to compete for food and would try to feed directly from the floor or from my other dog’s bowl.”

Due to this strange behavior, Susanne trained Neville to eat from a bowl. And ever since he learned how to do it, the dog treasured that bowl and claimed it as his own.

Two years later, the bowl is still his favorite object in the whole world and she doesn’t like to hide it. The pup takes him wherever he wants him to go. With a little help from Susanne, Neville even carries the bowl to his bed and sleeps on it.

Another similar story is that of this shelter dog from Memphis, Tennessee. Oliver was found as a homeless man who refused to leave a family’s backyard.

Animal control found it difficult to capture the elusive dog, as he would run out of the yard and jump over fences whenever officers approached him. Eventually, they caught him and took him to Memphis Animal Services.

As soon as he arrived at the shelter, staff learned that he once belonged to a home. The dog was intelligent and a great lover of food and treats.
He knew that if he behaved well, they would give him a lot. Oliver loved to eat so much that he developed a habit of carrying his food bowl everywhere! The dog would have the bowl in his mouth most of the time, even when he was moved to his permanent crate.

The staff thought the act was so adorable and started taking photos of him every time he did it. They posted the cute snaps on their social media for others to enjoy.

Those images gave Oliver the exposure he needed, and the shelter began receiving an unusually large number of applications to adopt him. A few months later, Oliver’s new family arrived to pick him up and take him home!

We are so glad that these two dogs ended up finding their forever families who would love them for life! Share this story to encourage aspiring dog owners to adopt instead of buy.
